Computer Tips to help keep your computer running cleaner and quicker
- Defragment your computer hard drive about once a month if you have Windows XP. The utility is in the Rockbound Tools Folder on the Desktop. Vista and Windows 7 does this automatically.
- Do not click on offers that are too good to be true (from free iPads to a trip to Las Vegas for $50!) as you will be a victim of a scam, get lots of spam mail, have your credit card stolen, or let the world into your Facebook Account. These offers are too good to be true.
- Always use an antivirus program and keep it updated. We make sure all computers that leave our stores have virus protection that is fully updated. You will want to check for regularly and run your virus scan at least once a week or more often if you are a heavy user. If you download a lot or get a lot of email you may want to scan as often as daily. Most virus programs can be set to automatically scan during low usage hours.
- Malware / Spyware though not a virus can be just as damaging to your computer. Many computer performance issues can be attributed to malware / spyware. Like free antivirus software there are excellent free antispyware that will scan your computer and remove these threats. We have loaded several of these programs, that we think work best, on to your computer for you to use. Make sure to update them and run them every week. The more you use your computer the more you should use these programs.
- Backup your computer often. There are many ways to achieve this and Rockbound Computer can help you find the best backup device for you. Don.t take a chance on losing valuable or irreplaceable data. A backup device is a solid investment that will pay off sooner than you think.
- Do not take surge protection lightly. A single surge to your computer can damage your computer, cost hundreds in repair or erase your valuable and irreplaceable data. Think of a quality surge protector as insurance against the loss of information and not just the replaceable hardware. To protect your investment everyone should have surge protection. If lightning or severe storms are predicted unplug your computer from its power source and networking cables as well. Also unplug your router/modems as power surges come in through telephone and cable lines too. A surge strip will not protect you from a close lightning strike.
- If you have children consider parental control software for the computer that they use. Keep your children safe from harmful threats on the internet and keep their eyes safe from things that you do not want them to see. If your children are on the computer make sure you can always see the screen.
- Dust out the inside of your computer with canned air or an air compressor. Dust accumulates in the cleanest of homes and offices. If too much accumulates on the capacitors and heat sinks your machine will overheat and fail.
- Encrypt your wireless router. Security is important. We provide this service, call us if you have questions. Any information that is on an unencrypted wireless network can be spied upon. Having an unencrypted network is like yelling your credit card number, social security number and other important information in a crowded room. There are various levels of encryption, let us help.
